- About
Foothill Residence renews and expands a 1953 mid-century modern home in Austin, originally recognized with an Award of Merit from the Texas Architect’s Association. The design builds upon the home’s original L-shaped plan, extending its wings around mature oaks to create new courtyards and a stronger connection between architecture and landscape.
Light and nature guide the experience of the home. Floor-to-ceiling glass opens the living spaces to the surrounding trees, while a sequence of courtyards and pathways link the old and new structures. Sunlight moves through the house throughout the day, softening hard surfaces and blurring the threshold between indoors and outTerraces and walkways step gently across the site, connecting the shaded entry to the pool and garden beyond. Stone, wood, and concrete form a quiet palette that grounds the home in its hillside setting. The result is a calm, enduring residence that carries the spirit of mid-century design forward while embracing the warmth and ease of contemporary living.
